Looks like another addition for my wishlist. Every time I get the thing down to a manageable number (90 is manageable, right?) you go and post a review like this. I don't know if I should hug or curse you!
Thanks for your response! I know it's somewhat covered in SPIN, but at the rate I was reading, I didn't want to slow down to really let it sink in, you know? Looking forward to AXIS, whenever I get my hands on it...
Speaking of gender balance in the Hugos, did you see the list that just came out? I'm pretty excited about having four women nominated for best novel, though I think Bujold and Willis may have gotten nominated at least in part because of past history rather than the strength of their current books.
I am thrilled about that, and hope to talk about it this weekend. I'm with you about the Bujold and Willis, though I haven't read the Bujold. Both of them have their Hugos, and I want someone new to get it. And of the two women I've read, I really, really, REALLY want FEED to win! No offense to 100K KINGDOMS, but I thought FEED was a better book.
I've been sort of resisting reading Spin, because the premise didn't really grab me. Seeing that you sort of had the same general attitude going in, and seeing how much you ended up loving it, makes me think I should give it a try.
Yeah, I'm honestly shocked that I enjoyed it as much as I did, but in a way, it's a relief. Sometimes I'm afraid I'm too jaded to just enjoy things to unabashedly, but yet, I did!
I read this several years ago and absolutely loved it, couldn't put it down, but I remember being a bit disappointed by the ending. It's been long enough that I'm fuzzy on the details of why I was disappointed, but I definitely remember being unsatisfied. I might revise that opinion if I ever get around to re-reading it and continuing on to the sequel, though.
I also remember having a similar reaction to the only other one of his books I've read, Darwinia. In that case Wilson set up a ridiculously compelling mystery and when the reason for it was revealed it was kind of silly and I had a hard time suspending disbelief.
I'd been warned that the ending may not be as satisfying as it should be, so I kept expectations in place, though to be honest, I wasn't bothered by what I ended up with. And I plan on reading the sequel, so that probably helped too. :)
I do have Darwinia to read, so that'll be interesting to compare!

At least your wish list is smaller than mine!
