40) How did you come across your favourite band?

When I first heard Depeche Mode in the eighties, they seemed like any other New Romantic band - tinny and more than a bit frilly.  I had been more into Soft Cell, Adam and the Ants and Flock of Seagulls - DM didn't figure on my radar til college.

I didn't know they were your favourite band! I'm always surprised how big they are in America, I remember them when they were described as Uncle Pervs in Smash Hits and were pretty much laughed at for their subversive lyrics. I do love them though, good song choices.

They hit the US big time, didn't they? I had to laugh at the 'Uncle Perv' reference, as Martin Gore had some dodgy S&M gear and a lot of 'I'm gonna do you' lyrics. They had a longer lifespan than the likes of Duran Duran and others (I really liked bands like Flock of Seagulls and Cocteau Twins). I suppose I took more notice of them in the grunge era. Bought 'Songs of Faith and Devotion' and really liked it. I do have a broad spectrum re genoes, but I have stuck with DM ever since.
