Gaeltacht/Gàidhealtachd charities?

I am looking for information on good charities that support language preservation.

Also relevant would be other Gaeltacht- or Gàidhealtachd-related charities.

If you know of any that could use a little money, and that have a good reputation, please let me know.

WHen you say gaeltacht, do you mean just in Ireland, or are you considering Scotland (or other Gaelic/Celtic countries) as well?

I think there might be a slight preference for Ireland in the group, but we would consider other countries as well. My main criteria is that they *really* need the money, and we like what they're doing. If it's a charity with lots of wealthy backers, no, not as interested. We're looking for something where a little bit of money might make a difference. Of course, it's also really important that it's a group where we know the money actually goes to the cause, not to putting on big parties for wealthy patrons.

But, as we have really no candidates yet, any suggestions are helpful and I think we're actually quite flexible on this.

For language preservation, the National Yiddish Book Center is right in your backyard - link at http://yiddishbookcenter.org . There's also the UNESCO Endangered Languages Programme at http://portal.unesco.org/culture/en/ev.php-URL_ID=8270&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html . If that still doesn't meet your needs, you can try doing some searches at http://www.guidestar.org which has a database full of all US registered non-profits. If you register with them (free and they don't sell your address to spammers) you can read 990 forms and see a little more information.

As this is connected to the CR FAQ project, we're mostly looking for Gaelic or other Celtic-related charities in particular. We only just started brainstorming on this last night, so we're starting totally from scratch.
