I think we may well have had this conversation, but I went to a very prestigious private girls' college (miriamus goes to one very similar), where the expectation was that you push out straight As, in every subject, all the time, no matter what. It's how you gained any sort of worth...and seeing as I had bugger all worth socially, my self-esteem depended upon my marks.
When I came to Uni, I had the same mentality...but then I eventually learned to put things in perspective, and I learned that all I needed to do was pass...even if you just pass, hell you're still gonna get your bit of paper at the end of it. And, once I learned that...it totally set me free, and stopped me setting such ridiculously high standards for myself.
So, no, that's not scary, that is very wise indeed. :P
