Just posting to say I don't have any first-hand knowledge, but I'll ask the current MLIS students working here (Dalhousie U, in Halifax) whether there are many distance options here.
I did once meet a library tech in Winnipeg who was doing his degree distance via a school in the States. I think he had to do the occasional in-person session, though. It seemed to work for him but he was pretty close to the state he was going to.
I love UWM and I love distance learning. It's not at all miserable - there's great camaraderie and there's no problems keeping up. Just like typical classrooms, there are discussions to be followed and added to. You just have more flexibility in not being limited to participating within three set hours a week; you can post when you are ready. It's wonderful.
When I was applying, I also did UIUC (but they require one weekend a semester) and UW Seattle, and I think they just required one week before you started the program.
Financial aid wasn't that tough - I filled out FAFSA, accepted the loan and they gave me $16,000 a year.
