I do like Angel, and Dr. Horrible... however, I have never actually seen Firefly, although I don't know why, beucase I'm sure I'd like it if I did watch it.
I'd consider myself a geek, especially with regards to stereotypical geeky hobbies. I like comics, computer games, sci-fi shows, I am a huge Dctor Who fan... so yeah, I have been called a geek once or twice in my life :P
You should definitely try Firefly. It's brilliant. The only problem is it's depressing because you know they only made so many episodes and you don't get to find out what happens to the characters (and the film Serenity doesn't cut it, IMO).
What do you think of OMWF or Dr. Horrible? Do you like musicals in general?
Oh I love OMWF so much, it is easily the Buffy episode I have watched the most. Dr. Horrible is brilliant too. I can't watch either of those things in front of other people because I always end up singing along to the songs, without even noticing I am doing it, lol.
I tend to go for comedy or horror musicals mostly, which explains why I love OMWF and Dr. Horrible. The only other musicals I really love are The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Sweeney Todd... and Cats for some reason.
I adore Sweeney Todd!! I'm a musicals geek and a huge Sondheim fanatic (like Joss) and it's been my favorite musical since high school (I'm nearing 40 now -eep!!). I also thought the movie was brilliant!! (well, with one or two minor complaints.)
I had posted a survey about OMWF and musicals in general a little while back.
Wow, Cats does not seem to fit with those other shows at all... but I liked it too ('course I was 13 when I first saw it).
I adore Firefly and Serenity, but am ambivalent about Angel, and don't care at all for Dr. Horrible. I also liked his work on Astonishing X-Men, but haven't read much of Season Eight or After the Fall.
As for being a geek, sure, if you compare me to most normal people. I feel totally out of my element when around real geeks, though.
Hm. A real geek is someone who has a wide-ranging and expansive knowledge of pop culture, with an emphasis on fantasy, sci-fi, and related genres. There's also aspects of fanaticism, which I don't think I show that much. I consider myself more of a Trekkie and Joss-nerd, and don't really know much about other facets of geekdom.
Were you the person that made the entry inquiring about musicals months ago? That's impressive that you remember my response, if so. If not, it's kinda creepy. :p
More seriously, yes, it's my apathy towards musicals, but also the music and acting. None of it did it for me.
I like Angel, though not as much as Buffy. And I adore Firefly...one of the best shows ever. I could never get into Dr. Horrible even though I tried when it was being played constantly.
I like good sci-fi (think BSG), and role playing but don't consider myself a true geek.
In terms of Angel, I can take it or leave it. I love Fred though. I enjoyed Firefly, but I have no long-term involvement with it, fandom-wise. Didn't see Dr Horrible, but I am looking forward to Dollhouse, because I'm a big Eliza Dushku fan.
I definitely consider myself a geek! Not the biting-heads-off-chickens kind, but the modern variety. I'm a committed fangirl, my favourite fandoms at the moment being NCIS, Heroes and LOST, and I'm a big academic geek - bibliophile, linguaphile, and history buff.
And of course, I have a plethora of geeky icons ;)
Awesome! Tho it sounds like your tastes are not as much in sci-fi/fantasy - true, Lost and Heroes, but they're also pretty mainstream. Also, Do you equate being a fangirl with being a geek?
Being a fangirl is one aspect of geekiness, certainly. Anybody can watch a TV show, but it takes a geek to really get into it and analyze things to death and pick up on little hints that casual viewers wouldn't notice but the writers put in because of the geeks watching (LOST does this especially, which is one of the main reasons I love it, since I loathe most of the main characters).
I'm a big fan of sci-fi/fantasy, but in terms of TV shows, not usually so much. I don't like space shows (Firefly being the one exception to that). But in terms of writing, I love Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman and Jacqueline Carey and David Brin, so that's pretty into the genre.
But there's more to geekiness than just fangirling. There's the constant Internet use, the history/language/book geekiness I mentioned earlier... I'm not so much a tech geek, but I can hold my own there as well if need be.
"Anybody can watch a TV show, but it takes a geek to really get into it..." --Or an academic, which in many ways is the same thing. fan-scholar; scholar-fan... :)
I watch Lost too, though I agree I don't like all the characters... I don't necessarily hate them either... truth is, it's been so long since I've seen the show I kinda don't remember! I don't really watch space shows either, other than Firefly.
The first of Joss' stuff I watched willingly was Firefly. Smush space and old west together and I'm hooked! ;-p It may still be my favorite of the three.
Buffy came next, after my hubby went to a party where they showed a bunch of Buffy and said, "You have to watch this!"
I still have mixed feelings about Angel. It's better than most stuff on TV but there are a lot other shows I'd rather watch.
I'm a geek. Have been since I was little. I've always been all about sci-fi and fantasy. We grew up thinking being weird was way better and far more interesting than "normal". Dad read hard-core sci-fi (Asimov, Heinlein, Herbert, Farmer, Pournelle), so I suppose I was doomed from an early age! ;-p

Why didn't you like Dr. Horrible? ...tho I seem to recall you generally don't like musicals. Is that why?

Yes, that was me, so you can be impressed, not creeped out. :)
Yes, I'm still putting together my research, so I remembered your answer from before.
