I've been looking for an excuse to post my first LJ entry from Smithers, and this seemed as good a reason as any. I want to give a huge thank you to waysofseeing for doing the hard work of installing Parallels and getting Windows XP up and running ( Read more... )

There are a couple of different ways you can share documents between the Mac and Parallels; I think they're pretty well documented. I dediced I want one master copy of all files in one place, and I want it to be on the Mac side, so I chose to allow Windows access to my Mac file system. The way they arrange this is that they create a pseudo-network drive under windows (Y: and Z:) that point into the Mac file system. Works fine so far.

The only risk of this, I suppose, is that if Windows gets infected with something nasty, the nastiness may be able to delete files on your Mac. Normally I'm more paranoid about these kinds of things, but I'm going to be doing effectively zero web browsing under Parallels, so I decided not to worry about it. (Admittedly nastiness can come through other avenues, it's just not that likely.)

PS: Aside from using the Dock, I found it handy to have quick access to my Application folder to start less-used programs. I created an alias for the Application folder and threw that into the Dock.

One little app I quite like is TaskPaper. It's a very simple app that's handy for keeping todo lists and notes in a simple fashion--somewhat like a text-only, very barebones OneNote. It saves into text files, so there's no file format lockin.
