A quiet day today. A good thing, as three of my library reservations turned up at once! (My local libraries are not very good, but I can reserve books from all over London. 60p a time, and I don't have the book left at the end - it's perfect for series I'm reading. Like Phil Rickman's Merrily Watkins mysteries, which is the one I've just got and am ( Read more... )

My library holds seem to arrive all at once no matter when I've placed the hold. We can place holds on the three different library systems serving our area.

Yes, it is a bit like that. I think they only deliver weekly, and I guess not much over Christmas, so I imagine that explains part of the pile up. But still, it's a lot (of good things!) to read.

I haven't checked out my local library since we moved. Thank you for the timely reminder that that is something I must do in the very near future!

I must admit to only going into our local library as they sell the compostable food waste bags. The trouble is it’s very small and they hardly have any books any more - it’s just not the same as I remember.

And so the downward spiral continues... that's very much how library branches are closing after a decade of cuts. But Bromley's definitely in the London libraries consortium, so you could borrow across the city now if there's stuff you don't want to buy.

Yes I always feel guilty about not taking advantage of the books there. I’d forgotten I have been to a few talks in the library. They also run a lot for children like story sessions so the Orpington branch is quite busy - it moved to the high street a few years ago which is much better as it was out on the outskirts of town which didn’t help footfall.

I do wish their reference section was bigger but being a small branch I suppose most stuff is in Bromley town centre library.

Yes, Bromley Central is huge (and has the archives too...). I've only been there for work rather than browsing, but it looked fairly impressive.

Incidentally, have you read the Murder of Harriet Monckton? It's a fictionalisation of a real crime there - I don't know that you spend much time in Bromley, but if you're interested in the Victorian town centre there's a lot about social setups in the area.

I love my local library, but I don't use it as much as I did because there are so many books on my shelves that I haven't read yet *g*

This is a a very familiar problem! But I have run out of shelves, so I am trying to use the library rather more sensibly now.
