I don't have much to say other than that I agree. The House fandom comes to mind. A lot of people fangirl Hugh Laurie, but he's not the only person who could play House, and there are a lot of actors who could do just as much given the same great writing.

I admit to thinking David Tennant is utterly divine, and that I would watch him in virtually anything he chose to act in, but I am able to appreciate that he is only playing a character, and that I watch the show for more reasons that just the fact that he's in it... After all, I watched Who with Sylvester McCoy in it and let's face it, he's hardly an oil painting.

However, I do think there are a lot of younger female 'fans' of the show who are fans simply because of him. And I suspect they are the ones who are busy making icons and squeeing over the pants thing. Personally, I found it funny and a sign that he's a genuine bloke with his head screwed on properly, but I'm not about to go off and write a crack!fic... Although, red knickers do feature in a smutfic I'm writing at the moment, so who knows... Maybe I'll put a little nod to your comment about the Doctor not rejecting ladies' knickers out of hand before trying them! ;)

He is definitely a cutie. I even adopted one of the icons, because I didn't have one for kink. And I would like to see him in Casanova, but Netflix doesn't have it so I'm not sure how to get it this side of the pond without trying to buy an import.

Chris Eccleston is more my idea of someone to obsess over, if I'm going to do it at all. I like how attached he still is to his hometown, and all those exaggerated features add up to an amazing look... but then, I kind of think "traditionally handsome" men are repellent (have never understood the Brad Pitt thing). I'm even trying to plot a DW/28 Days Later xover fic just cause the visuals make me happy. =) But it would be gen, because that's what makes sense.

Feel free to borrow my speculations re: the knickers. I'll look forward to reading that story, even if the red lacies are Rose's!

i totally agree with you... and sometimes the actors who portray the chars we love so much can be a real disappointment. That said, some of them are similar or even better. John Barrowman is every bit as shaggable as his Cpt Jack alterego (if either of them turned up at my door i'd be equally ready to drag them to bed) ;)

for me, certain people fit the part, e.g. as a voracious reader i found that David Suchet as Poirot and the original ITV series Miss Marple were just as I imagined them, because they followed the books with their characterisations so well. so for me, they are the ultimate. and much as I like Sean Connery, it irritates me a bit that he is always himself as far as voice goes. whereas Meryl Streep becomes the person she is playing. I love NCIS and Gibbs, but much as I admire Mark Harmon as an actor, to me he and Gibbs are separate people, and i don't get the feeling that they are particularly alike. go to bed with Gibbs? you betcha! with Mark Harmon? no way though i'd like him as a friend coz i think he'd be interesting. and whilst the writer should get the ultimate credit, for the writing, there are times when it is the actor who brings something to the part that makes it spark.

there are times when it is the actor who brings something to the part that makes it spark.Of course you're right about this... Spike, for example, was only supposed to be around for a couple episodes of season 2 Buffy, but James Marsters did so well and was so well liked that he hung around even past the end of the show, if AtS counts ( ... )
