The moon shone down on All Hallow’s Eve as Johnny hurried down a quiet North Side street, leaves dancing in wild arcs as he passed houses with glowing Jack O’Lanterns in the windows and on porches, paper cut-outs of Witches and ghosts blowing in the breeze as they hung from porch roofs and pillars. Clouds scudded across the face of the moon, creating shadows as his polished Oxfords cleaved through the leaves with purpose. He resolutely did not look over his shoulder.

He approached a house with a large, grinning Jack O’Lantern in the front window and a paper cut-out of a Witch on the door. He slipped inside, the warmth of the small foyer a welcome change after the chill outdoors.

He removed his dark-blue greatcoat and fedora, his white shirt crisp as his dark-blue pants were sharply-creased. He ran a hand through his chestnut hair, amber eyes seeing the glow of the Jack O’Lantern spilling out of the room at the end of the hall. The house was quiet except for the faint sound of music. After hanging his hat and coat on the foyer coatrack, he walked down the seemingly endless hall as he passed wallpaper with bluebells and butterflies, his heart pounding.

He reached the end of the hall, the dark parlor illuminated by the Jack O’Lantern’s candle. Its light flickered eerily on the walls, and the man he had come to see was seated in an overstuffed chair, the small Philco radio softly playing jazz.

“Mel?”

Mel’s face was in shadow, but Johnny recognized the black pants, white silk shirt, and Italian leather shoes of his lover.

“Mel?” Johnny stepped into the parlor, shivering as he felt a sudden drop in temperature. “You called me, darlin’?”

“Yes.”

“What’s wrong? Is Hoover on your back?”

“He’d like to be.”

Johnny wanted to erase that image out of his mind. He hated that bastard lusting after his man. He would dearly love to wring Hoover’s neck.

The Jack O’Lantern seemed to leer at him, and he resolutely turned away from it and asked, “What’s up, Sunshine?”

Teeth gleamed in the darkness, uncomfortably reminiscent of the Cheshire Cat. “Just lonely, I guess.” He purred as he held out a hand. “Show me that you miss me, too, darlin’.”

Something was not quite right here. Mel could be playful, but there was something…sinister here. Johnny’s mouth went dry as he looked at the slender arm outstretched, ready to take his hand.

And draw me in where?

The room’s coldness seeped into his bones and he broke into a cold sweat. He wanted to see Mel’s warm, welcoming eyes and reassure him that all was well.

“Come on, sugar,” crooned the familiar voice, layered with Southern honey.

Except it’s not.

The strong hand grasped his hand and began drawing him inexorably forward. Sudden panic washed over him as he felt the iciness of the other man’s grip. He dug in his heels but Mel was incredibly strong, dragging Johnny closer and closer.

No, not Mel! Something’s wrong here!

“Let me go!”

“Johnny, darlin’, don’t you want to taste me? I want to taste you.”

Johnny gasped as he got close enough to see fangs gleaming in the shadows, his lover’s beautiful brown eyes glinting with unholy fire as his face contorted in hungry anticipation.

Terrified, Johnny was fueled by a sudden rush of adrenaline and wrenched his hand away, yelping as it looked like the Jack O’Lantern lunged for him with jagged teeth. He bolted from the frigid parlor, heart thumping painfully in his chest as he ran down the endless hall, jazz floating out behind him.

Don’t look back! Don’t look back!

Grotesque shadows danced on the walls as Johnny strained to reach the foyer and the door out to the street. He could hear the rustling of silk and leather behind him as the mockery of Mel’s voice hissed, “Come with me, Johnny! I’ll show you pleasure beyond your wildest imaginings.”

“No!” Johnny felt as if he was trapped in a nightmare, his legs churning endlessly, sinking in molasses and going nowhere. With herculean effort, he lunged toward the door as the stench of sulfur filled the small foyer. The doorknob iced over as he grabbed it, its cold fire burning his skin just as a long, bone-white hand as dry as the grave closed over his hand on the knob, a leathery wing caressing his skin.

“Oh, darlin’,” hissed the now-raspy tones as harsh as sandpaper. “Give in and know endless pleasure.”

Johnny was yanked around and he screamed.

All Hallow’s Eve was moonlit and clear, the leaves gusting madly down the street as the wind rattled windowpanes. A slender figure dressed in black greatcoat and fedora hurried passed the decorated houses until he reached the one with the giant Jack O’Lantern in the front window and the paper Witch on the door. He slipped into the house, glad for the warmth of the foyer. It was quiet except for the faint sound of music. He noticed the glow from the Jack O’Lantern coming from the room at the end of the hall and hung up his hat and coat on the coatrack. He walked toward the parlor, wondering why it seemed to take so long.

On the threshold of the parlor he saw the Jack O’Lantern on the windowsill, its jagged smile unsettling as jazz played softly on the radio.

“Johnny, why are you sittin’ in the dark, darlin’?”

Teeth gleamed in the darkness from the shadowed figure in the overstuffed chair dressed in dark-blue pants, crisp white shirt and polished Oxfords.

”Just waitin’ for you, Sunshine.”

He held out his hand.
