My stance on the developments in the Buffy comics

Jan 15, 2012 05:41

It seems that everyone is posting their views on the latest development in Buffy season 9 - it''s mostly lot of anger and outrage at Buffy being put in that kind of situation by the writers, or, from the other side that it OK with the storyline, vehement denial of the disturbing consent issues. My view seems to be unusual. I've been ambivalent ( Read more... )

Hi!
I found this post because your icon of Angel/us. I'm happy to talk about Season Nine. I think that the consent issues are a problem in the storyline and I hope that Whedon and Allie do the best job portraing Buffy's emotions and decisions. The last issue was a pleasant surprise. I'm curious to find out about the daddy, because we need to know how Buffy got pregnant, if she was aware or if she's been raped. (I've read about the guy Heinrich as "The Master who's trying to rebuild the Seed" and, if it's true, Buffy have to deal with a rape)
I don't like much Jeanty's way to portray Buffy: he portrays her so very young, like she was in her 16. I prefer a much more mature version of the slayer.

Hi, thank you for your comment.

Whedon has promised that we'll find out what happened at the party, which is a relief for me - I don't want that to be left unresolved. It would be pretty terrible for Buffy never to find out what happened. I hope it's not a mystical pregnancy, I'm sick to death of possession/rape storylines, demon pregnancies and women being used as vessels for bearing babies. And portraying such a thing as good would be the worst of all. (I've been watching this British supernatural show called Hex, and god, it has the most jarring possible storyline of that kind, but at least it's portrayed as a definitely bad thing.)

I was thinking about mystical pregnancy too, mostly because in BtVS and AtS we see a lot of this stuff, and I'm scared: I don't want Buffy unable to make a choice. I read comments about Buffy obliged to make the baby, unable to do the abortion ... It seems the worst scenario for me. I'm with Buffy, with or without the baby, but I need to see Buffy as a strong, indipendent woman who can make her own decisions.
I'm really curious about the party, I need to know what happened.

I think the mystical scenarios are getting popular because some people just don't want to see Buffy having an abortion. It seems like many people who are pro-life would rather have mystical rape and mythology-breaking convoluted scenarios they previously said they were strictly against, than Buffy doing what many women do in real life. Other people are disturbed by the idea of Buffy having been raped, or just having sex while really drunk, so they want her to be pregnant through non-sexual means, even though that would've been a violation of her body without any doubt. (For the record - if it was a mystical pregnancy and Buffy was violated that way, it would just be all the more reason for her to have an abortion.)
