Well, like every other other recent poster, I found this community through the LJ spotlight. I don't feel like saying anything about myself, except that I love writing even more than I love reading and I'm debating about trying NaNoWriMo this year. On the the favorites, off the top of my head:
- Anything by Guy Gavriel Kay, but especially the Sarantine Mosaic series (Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors). Tigana and A Song for Arbonne are also good, his newest book The Last Light of the Sun has an interesting tidbit related to the Sarantine series.
- Anything by Tamora Pierce, although her newer work is definitely better than her first novels. I recommend The Will of the Empress.
- Crown Duel and Court Duel by Sherwood Smith.
- A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin, beginning with A Game of Thrones.
- Anything by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, but her Keisha'ra series is much more mature (begin with Hawksong).
- The Dragaeran books by Steven Brust; be prepared for either crazy persona-language or crazy chronological order.
- Song of the Beast by Carol Berg. She's written a lot of other books, but the library doesn't have most of them so I haven't read them. This one is a standalone and an amazing debut novel.
- Swordspoint by Ellen Kushner, contains well-written slash (and I normally don't read M/M pairings at all).
- Firethorn by Sarah Micklem, is decidedly explicit without being explicit. Which is oxymoronic, I know, but true.
Any recs along these lines? As you can see, I read mostly fantasy. I also like character-driven/intrigue-filled SF (Dune and Nekropolis) and historical fiction.
