Beauty of the Prairie

Apr 23, 2010 08:42

My photos of the prairie are so inadequate in showing its beauty.  Even if I weren't shooting through a dirty window at 80 mph, I wouldn't be able to come close to Judd Patterson's photography.  Judd was a little boy in our old neighborhood.  He has grown up to be a fine artist.  I contacted him by e-mail to ask permission to share some of his ( Read more... )

That first photo reminds me of driving back into Pullman through Union Flat Valley on Easter Morning, 1978, although it lacks the Prairie Falcolns chasing love-mad pheasants alone the creek.

Julia, my tiny prairie is gone, filled up with just more suburbs

If you go to Judd's website, he has some amazing shots of raptors you might enjoy--just type in which bird you are interested in seeing into the search box.

Union Flat Valley must be very beautiful.

It's gorgeous- there are pine woods on thesteeper north-facing slopes, and occassional stretches of Channeled Scablands sidechannel; the last time we were through, there were buffalo at one of the waterholes.

Julia, unlike most of the Palouse, it's a rocky place, so the big wheat fields are outside of the valley.

Beautiful - for some reason, probably to do with text books at school, I had never thought of the prairies having such lovely soft rolling slopes - I have a whole new mental image of them now.

People envision "flat" when they think of Kansas, but we are a large state and vary greatly from one area to another. I looked at Wiki, and discovered that the Isle of Man has 221 square miles to Kansas' 82,277 square miles, so that's a great deal of land with three different climate zones: humid continental, semi-arid steppe, and humid subtropical ( ... )

I am envious of your space - there are times when I wish I could drive for more than an hour without going around in a circle or getting on a boat for three or four hours!

I love your pictures showing the sunflowers near Salina - but they look like they are on pretty flat land - that you had rolling hills in 'prairie' hadn't occurred to me before. I would feel more at home than I thought, if there are hills.

I will have to go back to a childhood copy of Little House on the Prairie and read it with a different mental picture.

And I look at your photos of rolling hills, pastoral scenes, tropical flora, and the ocean, and feel as though you live in a very enchanted place ( ... )
