Coincidentally, I just watched Tron: Legacy the other day (testing Netflix on a new TV). Those fics were great, and made it all seem deeper than a Disney action movie.

Also, your initial comment about females ignored by the script reminded me of a conversation I had with some co-workers, wherein one was complaining that in chick flicks or romanticomedies or some genre of movies I didn't immediately recognize (clearly I don't watch enough movies) the occupation of the female lead is never mentioned. She's just a girl who is seen doing non-work stuff and is quirky. The other co-workers rattled off some counterexamples, and one pointed out that many of these movies have college-age characters, thus explaining the lack of occupations. So I'm not sure if they rebutted her point, but it seemed like kind of the same thing. Just develop or use the aspects that you need, without building a complete character. =/

That makes a lot of sense. It is aggravating, and one of the reasons I avoid films marketed toward women.
