One of the ways I put this in my own language is a desire to become "transparent" to God -- a transparent vessel to hold God in myself, a transparent conduit to transmit God to others. I wish God to burn off, or blow away, or wash out, everything in me that is not of God, everything that stands between me and God. Not for my Self to be annihilated ... the more all the extraneous stuff is cleared away, the more I am the unique human being He created me to be, the less I am the image I create, the less I am the false person I am trying to be (often with the best intentions!). The more I let my self-created self go, the more I become my real Self, though the more transparent that Self becomes.
