I saw him and Joanne Woodward in a bookstore in LA about 25 years ago, just browsing. Beautiful in every respect, the both of them.

It seems like it would be hard to be sad for the death of someone who accomplished so much in his life, but it's not. It is not at all hard to be sad.

[ it is really sad. he was a wonderful actor and, by all accounts, an extraordinary human being. maybe a year or so ago i saw a wonderful interview in which he talked about his wife -- "why would i go out for hamburger when i've got steak at home?" -- and how long they'd been together, how he looked at her every day and realised anew how much he adored her. so sad. ]
