Make sure you try a hot water bottle under the ear in question when you're trying to sleep. Also, the old hair dryer trick...if you've never done it, you take a hair dryer, set it to warm, use the low power, and aim it at your sore ear, holding it maybe two feet away. It really helps quell the pain, so well that I once actually fell asleep during it because it was the first time my ear had stopped hurting in over a day.
Wow, that hair-dryer trick works really well! I think I'd be happier actually seeing my doctor though and getting whatever antibiotics I need, though. Got to call again now.
Oh, definitely calling the doc is good. The hair dryer trick is only a stopgap measure to ease the pain. You still need some big ol' horse pill antibiotics.
Based on conversations we've had with our pediatrician, the Current State of Medical Wisdom appears to be that most ear infections aren't bacterial and thus aren't treatable by antibiotics. We've been told to "wait a couple of days" and bring him back if it doesn't get better (because something like 90% do) before getting antibiotics. The one time we did get them was because he'd already bene in pain for a couple of days before we saw the doctor (we were on the road).
But I have enough memories of waking up screaming in the middle of the night with ear pain and going to the ER for drugs that I keep thinking they do help... Hope you feel better soon.
