Dangerous Emotion

"Why am I doing this? This isn't like me." Raven muttered to herself as she glided down the hallway to River's room. It was rare for her to pay a social call to anybody, but after hearing whispers of River having 'an incident' earlier in the week, she was somehow compelled to drop by for an impromptu visit ( Read more... )

River paced around her room, wringing her hands and muttering to herself. Her mind was racing, wouldn't stay still. She caught a vision of Raven coming to the door. "A visitor, a guest, someone to see you," she muttered in almost a singsong voice. When the knock at the door actually came, she opened the door.

"You are welcome to join me, visitor, guest, but you may be displeased. It's not clear, it's a problem. It won't shut up, you see, and the drugs aren't quite quieting me. She has a problem."

Raven blinked in surprise, trying to parse out exactly what that odd greeting meant.

"A problem? Yeah, I heard." It's won't shut up...the drugs aren't quieting me... "You want to talk about it?" She watched River's face, trying to discern nonverbal clues from her behavior.

Glancing back over her shoulder at the trunk hovering behind her, she reminded River of a previous conversation. "You said something about wanting more books to read. I thought maybe that might help, for a while at least."

River was digging her nails into her palm in an effort to ground herself and pull herself out of her mind. Luckily, Simon foresaw this and had her clip her nails, so she wasn't bleeding. She didn't like long nails anyway.

"Books. Books would be lovely if I were here. But I'm not quite here, you see, I'm almost on another plane of existence. I'm not near them, you see. I'll be back eventually, but I'm on a journey, no mission, and he tries to bring me back, but there are problems sometimes." She was speaking in a rush, as if she was trying to force the words out of her system. She began to shake a little. "Oh god, I need to be grounded, back to earth, I'm drifting away..."

This isn't good, the cloaked girl thought to herself as the hostess began to shake.

Raven was at a loss of things to do for the poor girl before her. But something must be done, and logic, reason would not work because words would fall upon empty ears. She closed her eyes as she quickly thought back, trying to recall things that helped when she was losing the internal battle with the monster that lies within her.

...he tries to bring me back...

That was how Raven normally regained control. Someone would do something or say something that allowed her conscious self to battle back her emotions when they began to run unchecked. But from what she had heard in whispered rumors, perhaps simply grabbing her and shaking her would not be a wise idea.

An idea crossed her mind, dangerous though it may be. "River....River. Let me try to help you, before you hurt yourself." Raven spoke cautiously, hoping not to startle the girl.
