Lunch Break

The body is weak...I can't do much more than sit up and type and shake...While not normally a social person, Raven was somehow unable to ignore this girl's plight. It couldn't be as bad as having visions of the destruction of the entire world and the end of life as we know it, but everyone has their inner demons that they must face ( Read more... )

"Miss Roth," Kaiba murmured as he appeared behind her. He'd teleported to River's room, and he'd known Raven would be there too. The professor was careful in how he addressed her, however, as he'd been unable to predict how she would react to his presence.

"I trust you're worried about River, as well."

"I don't feel worried. I don't really feel anything." Raven stared at Kaiba blankly, her voice flat and unemotive. "But she needs to eat if her body has been pushed to the point of exhaustion. Simple as that."

"Of course you don't. My mistake," said Kaiba, a little coldly, though he wasn't angry. He surveyed Raven for a few seconds. "Do you hear anything in there?" He was going to ask a different question, but decided against it. He looked at River's closed door and then at Raven.

"Now I do," Raven calmly replied as she heard the scream from within. Not bothering to stop and open the door, she decided to walk through the wall instead.

"River Tam is our star pupil... creature of extraordinary grace."
"Nightmares?" "Off the charts. Scary monsters." "Let's amp it up, delcium 8-drop."
Needles, in the eyes, in the head, in her arms, in her legs, she was made up of needles piercing, and the images of her head opened wide--
Hitting and kicking with "extraordinary grace" and slicing with their own weapons and the flips and the ducking and dodging and that sickening crunch of the blade hitting bone and slicing clean through--

River awoke with a piercing scream and flipped off the bed, assuming a defensive stance, before she realized that she wasn't fighting. As she let out a sigh, she heard a knock at the door. Unable to stand for much longer, she sat back down on her bed. "Come in," she called out feebly.

A circular swirl of dark energy appeared in the wall as Raven stepped through. Quickly scanning the area and finding no threats, she looked at River and asked "You....okay?"

"It's irrelevant, my status is stable," she muttered under her breath. "I just... just... I see them," she whispered. "I heard every word. They didn't think I did, thought she slept, but I watched as they took River away."

"It is relevant." Raven paused, not knowing exactly what to say in front of the professor that was standing directly behind her. "I hope I didn't wake you, but it seems that you have company."

Liz walked quietly to River's room, but stopped before the door when she heard people talking. She recognised River's voice as well as Professor Kaiba's voice. There was a third voice as well, though. One she did not recognise, but one that made her shiver for some reason.

She hesitated for a moment, but finally gathered all her courage and knocked on the door. "R-River? Can I... come in... as well?"

River smiled at Liz's voice. "You can come in."

Liz opened the door and glanced carefully inside. She abandoned her cautiousness, though, once she saw River. The girl rushed to the bed and took the older girl's hands.

"You don't look good," Liz said in a small voice. "I think you've got fever and your whole body hurts, right?" She glanced up at Professor Kaiba, who had been offering something to River, though she did not know what. "...Can you... can you make her better again, Professor?"

Raven stood there, watching as the newcomer entered the room. She glanced at her in acknowledgement but said nothing.
