The episode was indeed awesome and full of all kinds of adorable. Your list is perfect and while I’m with you - I like the boys hiding out in dumps - I don’t mind their Batcave. I think it was cute how out of place they looked there and they’ll inevitably lose it sooner or later and be back on the streets.
I don’t think they way Dean talked about John was out of character. When you put him in a position like Dream a Little Dream of Me, when his back is really to the wall on the issue, the honesty about his feeling regarding what John did to him come out, but when his defenses are up he makes excuses.
I don’t think he’s even honest with himself let alone talking to someone else when he’s feeling defensive, which I think he very much did here. I think his default will always be to defend John in a situation like that. But I’ve never been bothered by his John worship - I’ve actually always liked it for being just another way in which his character is beautifully flawed.

Hey bb, yes, the John comment made me pause as well there. I was like, what? For exactly the reasons you said. And if you take it just as something some character in some TV show that's been going on for eight years has said, yeah, *does not compute*
But then I thought, hold on, this is SPN, things are never this easy. There are always different layers of possible interpretations. The best one I found was this one on smilla02's tumblr, where saferincages wrote

I'm glad to hear the John stuff felt weird to other people too! And thanks so much for sharing that post with me, it's a truly heartbreaking interpretation and probably correct. The ep makes a lot more sense to me thinking that the "he did his best" reaction is Dean's default, not that he truly believes it. *wibbles for him* Though I kind of wish the ep had seemed more aware of that, I guess.
