What I've been reading:

Star Trek

Matchmaker, Matchmaker
(Kirk/Spock) - A fic put out this week that should be pimped EVERYWHERE. Basically, it's Q trying to get Kirk and Spock together because he got in trouble and the other Q want him to make it right. I know now shit about TNG or the Q besides their basic definition, but you don't have to know ( Read more... )

I used to say pants pretty exclusively; I'd only use trousers to describe dressy slacks sometimes. But then when I started getting into the Elliot Minor fandom and I made some British friends, they told me that pants = underwear for them. So now even though I still picture pants as PANTS, I'm always imagining some British person picturing them as UNDERWEAR, which is not what I want them to do! XD So now... I generally just describe the pants themselves as jeans, khakis, slacks, etc. just to avoid any confusion. And when I see trousers I automatically think pants, they're interchangeable for me.

I forgot about pants being underwear. :) I guess it's so strange to me because no one here actually says 'trousers' and really the only two main British fandoms I was in was Harry Potter, which jumped around everywhere and you dealt with robes a lot, and then Merlin wherein they used the word 'breeches' most often because of the time period.

Since it's Star Trek fandom pants and trousers are interchangeable for me, I know that they mean trousers by pants (and not underwear) and vice versa and don't think either use is odd. Though speaking about characterisation then it would be strange if Kirk was to say trousers instead of pants, and Spock would use the word trousers instead of pants since it has a more formal ring to it, I think.

AND I AM SO EXCITED FOR THAT STAR TREK REC :DDDD thank you!

I know they mean pants, and I think you hit the nail on the head with when to use it. Spock using 'trousers', like Spock never using contractions, is normal and he is an exception to the rule. I imagine some characters may say trousers, like maybe Scotty, but Kirk being from middle-America, it would seem he would use pants. But then, language does change and who knows what the slang and common forms will be in two hundred years. :)

It is a VERY good rec. I'm so happy good shit like this is still being pumped out.

Spock so breaks all the rules, like how you have to use contractions and smaller words to sound natural in dialogue. :D

Thanks for the recs! I've never read Glee fic, but I think I'll check this one out. And the K/S one sounds hysterical.

I'm from NY and, as far as I know, people here only use the word pants.

I've tried a couple of Glee fics, but they were pretty disappointing. This is finally one of good quality and is exactly what I'd love from the show itself.

I have to admit, when I say trousers I say it with a british accent.

lol! I find it hilarious when British speakers write Pinto and either Chris or Zach will say 'bloody hell' or 'I'll give him a ring.' I always imagine them using high-pitched silly accents and being culturally insensitive. :D
