my mind is still occupied with 'the magicians'. i think it's a strong contender for one of my yuletide requests this year, but i'm actually not sure if i could offer it. i'd be too intimidated by his style, i think. i love his way with words, and idk if i would manage to imitate it to my satisfaction. on the other hand, i know i'm definitely ( Read more... )

I think the thing I loved best (actually, there are several things I love best) about that book is how completely it described college and post-college experience: it was very real even though it was set in a completely unreal universe. Also, the Fillory = Narnia tie-in, because who hasn't adored the Narnia books only to realize, upon rereading them later, that there's a darker side to them? And the line about too many magicians, and not enough monsters to fight. This book is like the "Catcher in the rye" for college students. It's not *just* an adventure story; there are so many different layers and themes, I almost wish I'd read it for a class so I'd have an opportunity to analyze the heck out of it.
