what was swept away in the floods from the Great Hurricane of '38. When we were kids we used to tell each other they were submarines, because that's what they look like, especially when the water is normal - big dark conning towers sticking out of the river. I'll try to get a better picture when the water goes down (oddly enough, they're not a big tourist draw, so I don't have any links to pics of them...)

Come on now, 'fess up: they really *are* the civic fleet, kept on standby in case the Lovecraftian kin of the dam-rebuilders (whom you told us about yourself) ever make it over the dam.

as long as I can restrain my curiosity from the extremes of daring - the bridges are all *very* high up, now, and sturdy, (see above pic of "submarine"), and I don't anticipate having to travel anywhere off the beaten path anytime soon.
It sounds like the memory of the flood of '38 is a cultural difference between MA and NH. Growing up in MA, the flood people talked about was the Great Molasses Flood.
