Abide with me, Fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens, Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, O abide with me

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness
Where is death's sting? Where grave they victory?
I triumph still, if Thou ( Read more... )

Have a listen to the Remembrance podcast on iTunes or on the Royal British Legion blog. It's a good way to remember.

I agree with everything that you said.

And "Abide with Me" is one of my favorite hymns. So beautiful, and so moving. My cousins and I sang it a capella in 4-part harmony at my great-grandmother's funeral in September.

I just love that hymn. My college choir did a great a capella version of it a few years ago, and it's one of my favorite. But that's a great memory of it for you--there are a few songs from my grandparents' funerals that I love just because of those deeply moving and poignant memories.

I love the history and heritage of Remembrance Day. It's probably my favorite non-religious (Christmas or Easter) holiday. There's just so much meaning inherent in it.

It's always seemed odd to me that Memorial Day is the beginning of summer. For some reason, the holiday of remembrance and reflection, especially combined with the sobriety of war, seems like it's better suited for winter. It's probably just that's what I grew up with, but it seems to fit.

I really like that poem, too. I'm pretty sure I've read it before, but it's always good to read again.

The 'Flanders Field' poem made me cry.

It's made me cry many times. I think I've heard it every year of my life, and I've had it memorized since I was in elementary school, and it still moves me to tears at least once every year.
