I just got to the end of season 2 of The Great Eastern, and am listening to the 19 AUG 1995 episode again, and it is its own weird space. I can see the several levels I'm supposed to be attending as the episode winds down

OK, you convinced me to track down and try the GE, and i just got through listening to the first episode. Pretty funny, even if i don't understand all the local reference, it's very droll. I'll probably try to catch some every day or so, see if i can catch the fever. I love different takes on humor, especially this kind of sendup of the media and colloquial culture. I have to say the choice of music is singular! Is it all real, or interspersed with made-up stuff?
Also, is there a place you can buy compilations of this?

Ahh, yes. We've been wondering about that. Some of that accordion folky stuff sounds suspicious to me, too. I think Figgy Duff was real, though, and if you believe the internet, the outro music, The Jig Is Up, is done by one of the former members of Figgy Duff. But, who knows, I can find the tourist page for West Xylophone on the internet? :P
Let me know what you find... yeah, I've told the mister I want him to take me to West Xylophone the next time he feels like celebrating our anniversar(ies)/repeat f*ck-ups/uh, love......
It seems to me that music done for effect in the middle of a satire CAN be the most sublime comedy
