My friend uses the one from Sephora (their brand). She really has the patience to be precise with it so it always turns out really well. I have never tried it though so I can't give a personal experience. She did get compliments that they looked professionally done. She used Ballerina Slippers by Essie as the base.

I bought a kit from Sally Hansen and another brand that came in purple packaging. I'm not sure of the name, I'm sorry, but .. stay away from the Sally Hansen one. It works, but it's runny and not as white as the other brand I tried. The kits are nice though because the basecoats usually compliment very nicely to one another.

I have mastered doing other people's and my toes, but not my hands, yet. I don't think I ever will, haha.

i've never used one of those pens, but what works really well for me are those strips you put on, paint the white on & after it dries remove the strip. i use the manicare ones & people always tell me that my nails look like they're profesionally done.

seconding this. except I just cut off bits of masking tape in a roughly curvey shape and it works fine.

I just gave myself a french manicure a few days ago!
Quite honestly, all you need is a little patience and a steady hand with the polish, and you never have to pay for another french manicure in your life.
Just start making thin strips at the edge of your nail and then go from there. Make it a sweep from one side to the other. Just keep practicing - it only took me two tries to get it perfect!

I'm not too bad actually, I just think I need a white polish with a thinner brush. I have an OPI one with a pro wide brush and it can make the white part look too wide sometimes.

I actually did find a pen that works great, but the color is shimmery white not opaque.... GRRRR
