learn to french braid?
aloe gel makes a good styling product, and you can use it as a moisturiser and shaving product as well so you have less to carry around with you. Oils work as well, you'll have to try both to find out what your hair likes best, and oil is a little harder to carry around, but you use less overall and so need a smaller bottle. I like almond and apricot oils a lot, if you can afford jojoba (it's not that expensive as a little goes such a long way) it's another favorite, but I don't use it to shave with as it's too light and expensive.

my hair is really short, can you french braid it if it's short?

and aloe gel, just regular stuff? the stuff im looking at is just for irritated/sunburnt skin... and the oils, in what kind of shops would you buy them? health food stores, the body shop, etc?

you can french braid shorter hair, it is just a little tricky. as long as the hair from the sides of your head will get to the topwhere the braid is it'll work.

Aloe gel is aloe gel for the most part. try to get it as pure as you can, without stabalizers, color, fragrance, alcahol, etc. and it will be better for you all around, but it makes a nice light hold gel for styling, or you can rub it in to wet hair for less frizz and hopefully in your case less volume. The oils can usually be bought at health food shops, trader Joe's, some drugstores are starting to carry them, specialty food places as almond and apricot are edible, some hippie shops, or I buy mine at massage supply shops as I have one locally an it's cheapest without going online.

Headbands or bandanas. You could also braid it, or perhaps tie it into pigtails.
