Make-up hints for a dark-haired novice...

Hello!

Just found this comm the other day and thought it looked promising! I would love some hints for Anglo-Indians (and novices in general). I come from a pretty conservative background so what little I know about makeup I've picked up myself. (And I know very little. I don't even know what a base coat on nails is or how to apply foundation).

Questions! )

hair dye, make me over, nail polish, foundation primer

1. Not really, although if you're wearing nail polish and taking it off very frequently that will be damaging. If you're worried about weakening your nails you can get moisturising and strengthening nail polish removers which will help with that.

2. If your hair's very dark it'll be difficult to dye. You'd probably have to bleach it first for anything other than going even darker or maybe giving it a slight tint of another colour over the black. Especially because you're so inexperienced, I'd suggest that you get anything done at a hairdressers' rather than using at-home dye kits. They'll also be able to give you much better advice than I can.

3. I would suggest nice eye makeup, probably pretty dark - black eyeliner and good mascara to make your eyes stand out behind your glasses. Then maybe some more subtle lip-gloss or balm.

4. Maybe a gold/bronze, or dark blues and greens? I always think they look nice on Asian skin. I would try to avoid anything too pale though.

1) Yes, if using a nail polish remover with acetone, nails will be damaged. It's alright to use, as long as it doesn't become a daily thing. Also apply oil to your nails/cuticles frequently to moisturize, as the acetone is drying.

3) Make-up- For your skin: foundation (you can apply with fingers), concealer for blemishes, a warm blush (Mac Gingerly is really good for light olive skin. For your eyes: depending on your eyebrows, you should fill them in with a dark brown eyeshadow. Define your lash line (as close to your eyelashes as you can get) with a dark brown eyeliner and use mascara on top and bottom lashes. Use a warm nude lipstick or gloss on your lips.

4) Golds and bronzes. Sally Hansen makes great ones.

A base coat on nails is a clear undercoating that smoothes the nail and also helps the polish adhere better, and last longer. Here's a link:

A regular manicure is usually a base coat, two coats of color, and a top coat. The base coat is not strictly necessary if you're in a hurry, but it's a good idea. And a lot of times I'll just use a base coat by itself for extra shine, if I'm in too much of a hurry for a proper manicure.

I use a non-acetone polish remover.

I agree with the recommendations for gold/bronze nail polish, and also medium-dark blues and greens. Maybe even yellow or orange?

Non-acetone polish remover is fine for frequent use but if you use a nail polish with a lot of glitter in it the 100% acetone usually works best to take that off because it doesn't come off so easily ( ... )
