I love our Med school explanation of why allergies are really a modern problem. Here goes.
Allergies are caused by some pretty big white blood cells called granulocytes (eosinophils and basophils). These are so called because they are filled with granules of horrible digestive enzymes and acid, and chemicals which summon other white blood cells. When they are stimulated by an 'antigen' - AKA something that the body recognises as A BAD THING GUYS - they barf up all of their granules, essentially irritating all the tissue around them.
When is that ever going to get useful? Why on earth have these barfy bastards going around ruining everything for everyone? Weeeeeell, what if 'all the tissue around them' doesn't belong to the body, it belongs to... parasitic worms! Yay! Party at their house, and they can pay for the cleaners
( ... )
i remember when i was younger i was like "what! why did these people just sit down and take it, that's dumb". then i realized they were up in arms like, all the time! it just didn't work out because, well. pointy stuff. also it's dumb to judge people of a different era by modern standards, but i'm pretty dumb so i do it all the time!!
