For about the first, 5/6 of the movie I was having periodic fits of, 'No wonder uninitiated critics are bitching about this.' It does feel just like you were dumped in the middle of a TV series.

Though Serenity was paid for by Universal, no small firm, everyone knew from the start that major success is a long shot. For one, its creator is still closely associated with past work that's received extremely polarized reviews. Secondly, Hell, the show itself got cancelled (never mind it was prbly the broadcasting company's fault; they aired it at weird times, showed the episodes completely out of order, pulled it very early on--). They couldn't be sure about the profits.
