hell, did they ever release anything explaining his departure beyond the quick statement from frank?

I thought he was touring with a drum school thing teaching people to play? I saw a picture of him on the website but have totes forgotten the name of it.

No further explanation from the band (which I actually commend them for, nothing more NEEDS to be said by them). Rob Cavallo did say a bit more in a magazine interview from last year (Spin maybe?), and it was clearly creative differences. The band wanted to go one way, Bob didn't, and so it was.
