In spite of his chosen profession, Ryo was not, by nature, a violent man. He far preferred to bring suspects and arrestees in peacefully, with no damage either to them, or to him and his partner. Unfortunately, this meant that some people considered him soft. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Not enjoying violence didn’t mean he wasn’t good at it. True, when he’d taken up karate and dabbled in other martial arts he’d done so primarily for fitness and flexibility, but he was equally capable of using his training for both self-defence and for disarming people. He was also a skilled marksman, with either rifle or handgun, and was fully capable of shooting to kill.

Killing was, however, always a last resort. Better to bring any criminal in alive and, where possible in one piece, than in a body bag. For one thing, there was less paperwork involved, and for another, dead men couldn’t learn from their mistakes.

Nevertheless, when violence was necessary, Ryo Maclean did whatever had to be done, and when it came to protecting the innocent, his partner, fellow police officers, or himself, he didn’t hold back.

Ducking under the knife wielded by a drugged-up thug, he caught the man’s wrist, dug his shoulder into his attacker’s stomach, knocking the breath out of him, flipped him onto his back, knelt on him, and slammed his arm into the curb. There was an audible snap as the thug’s wrist broke and the knife fell from his fingers, but as high as he was on drugs, the young punk didn’t seem to notice, slamming his other fist repeatedly into any part of Ryo he could reach, but failing to dislodge him.

It took a swift punch from Ryo to subdue him.

Dee staggered to his feet, clutching his side where the knife had opened a shallow gash across his ribs.

“Huh, looks like ya didn’t need me at all. Nice work, bud. You okay?”

Ryo managed a wry smile. “A few bruises is all; you got the worst of it. So much for hoping he’d come quietly.”

The End
