As Buffy makes her way through the corridors of Sunnydale High she can hear the other kids whispering behind her back. Great; this is just like her latter days at Hemery, everyone spreading stories and rumours about her, except now she’s the crazy new girl who attacked Cordelia Chase at the Bronze.

To think that when she’d started school here, only a matter of a few days ago, she’d tentatively hoped she might have found her first friend in Cordelia. But no, that just wasn’t in the cards and after recent events she’s the most popular topic of conversation.

“Pay no attention to them,” Xander advises, falling into step with her on one side, Willow on her other side. “They’ll lose interest as soon as something else gossipworthy happens.”

“They will,” Willow agrees. “Around here, there’s always something else happening, it’s the one thing you can always count on.”

“Besides, after last night, I’d say you’ve earned some respect. Lots of people talking about how you dealt with the drugged-up gate-crashers at the Bronze.”

“I’d just as soon everyone forgot all about that,” Buffy mutters. “So much for my secret identity.”

Xander shrugs. “It’s still secret. Nobody who wasn’t there believes a word of it. Especially the part where the big guy exploded into dust.”

“Trick of the light.” Willow nods sagely. “That’s what people are saying. Or maybe spiked drinks. We Sunnydale folks are very good at rationalising anything we don’t want to believe. We’ve had lots of practice.”
