[Danny is sounding more than a little stressed today. But then, running into creepy fruitloops had a way of doing that to a boy.]

Peter. Hey, Peter Burke. Guy with the mecha-cat? I need to talk to you. Like, right now.

And anyone else who's listening? Mind filling me in on what the heck that fruitloop with white eyes wants?

[Chuck nods in acknowledgment.] No, I hear that. Come on down to the pub.

Now there's a phrase I was pretty sure i wouldn't hear for another six years.

[But a few minutes later there is a knock at the door.]

[The door swings open, since it's pretty much a no-go on the "locking and latching" front, to reveal Chuck inside, sitting cross-legged right on top of the bar. He beckons the kid inside.]

Hey, come on in. Danny?

Yeah, that's me.

[Danny steps in, and as he gets closer s few finger shaped bruises and a deep cut on one side of his neck become obvious.]

[He notices that, and winces in sympathy.]

Ouch. Did you wash that?

Yeah. Couldn't find anything that looked clean enough for a bandage.

Oi vey. [Chuck hops off the bar and shrugs off his own jacket, button down, and T-shirt, then puts his button down and jacket back on. Then he puts his jacket back on, grabs for a clean, empty bottle, and makes for the door, T-shirt in hand.]

Come on, let's get you fixed up.

[Danny rolls his eyes and follows him out. he'd hate to think how all all of these adults would react if he was actually badly injured.]

Fine. Whatever.

I saw that, smartass. [Yeah, he can give crap with the best of them. Chuck doesn't believe in treating kids like delicate snowflakes. He also doesn't believe in people trusting their children with himself, but that's life for you.

Chuck walks with him, heading right for the gate to the barracks and out to the stream.]

[Danny takes a few long strides to catch up, his good humor restored.]

You do realize this is just a cut? It probably doesn't even need to be bandaged.

It looks deep, and trust me- that stuff can kill you. I had an uncle die of sepsis from a cut he got in a bar fight.

[When they reach the stream he stops and takes another look, sputtering a little when he sees.] And- dude, you're still bleeding. Don't sell me that I'm-fine crap, okay?

[He hefts the bottle in his hand nervously, shifting his grip to the neck of it.]

[Danny reaches up and winces as he touches it.]

I guess it is. I didn't really notice.

[Chuck winces, reaching out to stop his hand.] Leave it alone, seriously.

[Then he gets awkward about it and pulls away.] Here, hold this. [He tosses his T-shirt at Danny tetchily. Clearly the only course of action is to whirl around without warning and smash the bottle hard against the barracks wall, jumping back to avoid shattered glass.] Careful- go over there. [Indicating a few paces down the stream, to avoid glass. Chuck himself takes off his jacket, wraps it around his hand, and picks up the largest shard of glass, holding it like a knife.]

Kay.

This place doesn't have scissors and I'm not spending eight hours convincing someone to lend me a blade. Can you lay my shirt down flat?

[That done, he quickly cuts the shirt, ripping it at the seams, then sets to work slicing through the material to make thinner strips of fabric.] This- hnn -won't exactly be useful as a giant ass bunch of cotton, you know?

There. When he gets a few strips cut, completely ruining the shirt by the way, he tosses the shard of glass into the stream, sets his jacket aside, and starts washing a couple of them in the running water.] Why don't you wash off again? I mean, you did touch it.
