Pretty Meme: Day Eight

Jun 06, 2011 21:33

Today has been slightly horrendous. One of the comments I got in the workshop was this: "I am still waiting for the story to break out into the unusual elements that will make it different from other stories of this genre." Oh, thanks. Great. I'm writing fantasy so generic that it has literally nothing setting it apart yet. (Also, same person ( Read more... )

Don't worry about the comments people make, at the end of the day you can't please everyone. Sounds like that guy was generally negative.

Normally, I don't let it get to me - but that one just seemed really harsh yesterday.

That gif really cheered me up, though. :D

Normally, I wouldn't let a comment get to me. (I know they're just trying to help, after all.) It just felt really harsh at the time.

UGH, you're so right about the romance/chick-lit plot! Those things ... they are so predictable. *sigh* (To be fair, one of the love interests doesn't normally sparkle either ...)

I know fantasy is, by nature, pretty generic. I mean, look at the term we're using: generic. It you're writing within an genre (no matter what it is), it'll be generic just by dint of being in that genre. (Also, I could be just as harsh back and say, "Well, you write tediously generic Irish Literature." But I don't, even if I think it, because that's just a mean way of putting it. I think it was the phrasing that hurt more than anything.)

*hugs back lots* Thanks for the general encouragement. It really helped. :)

Really? I find her much prettier in the picture I used for the meme itself. I guess personal taste, though ...

I couldn't get hold of Game of Thrones yesterday! D: Might have to try again now ( ... )

Rule one of your hair: If you like it, it's awesome. :)
Also, did that person talking about your writing have anything positive to say? Because if all he's got are complaints I'd be tempted to ask if it was just that he doesn't like the genre...
Also, I agonised over this one. :) It's going to be even harder tomorrow, though!

Haha, I like that rule! :D Normally, I wouldn't care - it was just the way he said it, really. :/

I know for a fact that there are a grand total of four people in my workshop group (of twelve) who read fantasy for pleasure. And I'm one of them. So, yeah, it's pretty much genre snobbery - I think, anyway. (I don't know how he can even make that comment, if he doesn't read it, but hey. Whatever. Teaching myself not to care. I know he's just trying to help, but argh. Argharghargh!)

I KNOW, THEY MAKE NO SENSE.

As of right now, I have only to see the finale. :D (I thought the drawing-a-heart-in-the-air moment would possibly make more sense in context. Nope, it doesn't, it's just massively gay. <3 GOD but I love this show!)

Chiiiiiiin, he is the most badass of the Hufflepuffs! \o/
