The US vice presidential mismatch

Oct 03, 2008 13:44

Well, I just tuned into the American vice-presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. I think the conclusion is pretty bloody clear: Biden steamrollered Palin. By any standard of politics or debating that you wish to apply, Palin was quite simply incompetent. Let's assess them individually ( Read more... )

...and like certain prominent members of our current administration, she can't pronounce "nuclear". awesome. unfortunately, most of the people who will vote for the republican ticket probably don't realize she's saying it incorrectly! *sigh*

I'm not sure that's even worth dignifying with a response. If nobody cares about policy and it's just all about a charismatic performance, then we might as well pack in the entire political system and its bureaucracy, go home, and let the most popular Hollywood actor of the day run the show. Oh wait, welcome to contemporary California.

It's not as if Palin's performance was charismatic anyway, unless you're a Bible Belt redneck. Her "folksiness" won't be winning over many undecided voters, that's for sure.

The last two sentences were what I originally hit the "Reply" button to address. After watching the presidential debates, a good friend of mine sent me an instant message containing one word: "NUKULAR." And the discussion went on from there. Unfortunately, as this friend and I got to discussing what we had just watched, we realized she had likely successfully won over a substantial portion of the population in our area (or else just got those previously supporting McCain a little more riled up than usual). If Palin was aiming her messages at lower-class, uneducated Republicans (read: rednecks), she debated very, very well. "Can I call you Joe?" "You betcha!" "Darn right!" As sad as it sounds, her language likely mattered more than the substance of her debate (which was virtually non-existent anyway), because all of a sudden all of these rednecks in their mobile homes scattered across the Bible Belt could relate to her, all because she SOUNDS like them ( ... )

Another post, from the first poster's husband.

Sorry to link-spam you like this, but I find both sides of this really interesting.

I completely agree. Her job was to tell voters why they should vote for McCain. And she failed at that. Even Biden had more to say about McCain's health care plan than she did! Nor could she defend McCain's record, or his plans. She constantly veered off-topic, she hammed it up, and frankly looked very unprofessional up there.

I was also deeply insulted by the way she did not even acknowledge Biden when he became choked up while talking about his son.

Biden may have been boring, but he did his job. He told us why we should vote for Obama, and not for McCain.
