Ah, Sugar Sugar

How can companies justify charging well-above the costs of production, advertising, and distribution for their (sometimes good) products? Fresh's Sugarbath Body Polish costs $62.50. It's much loved, but sixty dollars for some sugar and oil? I doubt it costs them more than $5.00 to make a jar. Even considering their need to make a profit and appeal ( Read more... )

I had never heard of a "sugar scrub". Now I know!

Do you make the 1:1, sugar:glycerin base,
or the 2:1, sugar:oil base?

The 2:1, sugar:oil base. I usually use grapeseed, coconut, almond, or olive oils singly or in some combination. Then I add some essential oils, white or brown sugar and violà! :)

Cruise on over to the soap dish forums and start reading the "Cosmetics, Bath & Body". If you become a member you get access to a Recipe forum. I've been playing with a recipe for an emulsified scrub I found there that is much nicer than any commercial one I've seen. By this time next year I expect you to be making your own soap & lotions as well.

I just read the $80 Salt Scrub?! post and laughed at the "wrinkle-erasing elves." Pretty much.

I got a gift certificate for Bramble Berry on Christmas. My plan is to get my feet wet with the melt and pour sampler and go from there.

Salt scrubs are easy as dirt. The best recipes to start with are called "Bohunks 14" and "Holy Grail" if you want to search. If you have trouble just e-mail me and I'll send them to you.

If you want to try a lotion (only slightly more difficult) I suggest bandicoot's olive oil and honey. (Frequently referred to as OOH and the current topic of a rant by Bandi -- apparently scores of people have been e-mailing her to ask math questions or "what if I do X instead of Y" about the recipe that she posted 7 years ago.)
