katmillia "Sebastian!" Aunt Helen squeezed him tightly and kissed his cheek with enthusiasm.
Sebastian put on his best "happy to see you" face and hugged her back. "Aunt Helen! I'm so glad to see you!" The scent of her perfume wafted all around him, and he had to hold his breath so as not to gag on it.
"It's so wonderful that you could make it. Come in, come in. Let the maid take your coat." She finally released him to hug his father. "Edward, hello! Tiffany, your dress is stunning. Kathryn, just look at you!"
The party was in full swing already, with tuxedo-clad waiters sliding easily through the crowd with trays of champagne and hors d'oeuvres. Sebastian snagged a glass of champagne from the nearest one, and neatly dodged the rampaging advance of a very large matron clad in sequined blue silk. Behind him, he heard her loud greeting applied to his father and stepmother. He stepped to the side and leaned on the railing that protected him from tumbling off the landing of the grand staircase, studying the partygoers below.
Aunt Helen's holiday party was always the talk of the city, and this year looked to be no exception. The balustrades had been wrapped in glittering fairy lights and woven spruce garlands. The most glittering of Manhattan's upper crust were a sea of bright colours and sparkling jewels.
Kathryn, clad in simple white silk, glided up to him with a glass of soda in her hand. "What, not gone off to a corner with some impressionable debutante yet? It's been almost three minutes. You're slipping, Sebastian."
"And you're not on your knees on the Aubusson in the upstairs parlour," he replied. "Your date not here yet?"
"Unlike you, I don't attempt to have sex with three different people at every social gathering." Kathryn studied the crowd over the rim of her glass.
"No, just the richest one at any given event--you take after your mother that way. Myself, I prefer the attractive." Sebastian drained the remaining champagne from his glass. A passing waiter took it and offered him another, which he waved off with a flick of his hand.
"Are you sure you don't take after your father?" Kathryn cast her gaze in the direction of his fly.
"Would you care to find out?" Sebastian trailed his hand from the nape of her neck to the base of her spine.
Kathryn shrugged her shoulders as though to dislodge an irritating insect. "I'm busy, Sebastian. Find yourself an innocent young thing to deflower."
"They're boring. They provide no challenge to me."
"I'm sure we can find one for you. All sorts of people are in town for the holiday, but we'll start with the locals. What about your psychiatrist's daughter?" Kathryn suggested, nodding at the blonde giggling in a corner.
"Marci? Not yet. She wants more cultivating. Besides, her mother is here. It'll be ever so much more satisfying when naked pictures of little Marci suddenly appear on the Internet and she has no idea where they came from."
Kathryn sighed. "Picky," she muttered.
"Well, who do you plan to bed this evening, dear sister? Court Reynolds?"
"Hardly." Kathryn examined her fingernails carefully, as though she thought to find a flaw in the gleaming dark-red polish. "He's not nearly desperate enough for me. In six months, he'll be begging me to give him what he wants."
"Which you will, of course, be only too happy to provide." Sebastian plucked the glass out of Kathryn's hand and sniffed it. "Vodka?"
Kathryn retrieved her glass with an impatient tug. "Rum." She sipped, looking thoughtful. "Marcel Delacroix's nephew is in from San Francisco."
Sebastian followed the direction of her gaze to a slim, blonde man clad in black. "Kathryn, are you sure he'd even want you? He looks like he might rather prefer men."
"I can make him want me."
"Yes, because you've done so brilliantly at that with Blaine."
"Blaine is boring."
"It really burns you that you can't seduce him." Sebastian smirked.
"I don't want to seduce him. He'd have no idea what to do with me."
"I'm sure you could educate him quite thoroughly. What was the name of that freshman last year? The one who had to leave school with a nervous breakdown?"
"I don't remember," Kathryn said, draining the remainder of her drink. "Unlike you, I don't find it necessary to record every sexual encounter."
"You could make a fortune if you videotaped yourself."
"And ruin my reputation?" Kathryn scoffed. She returned her attention to the crowd below them. "There's always the Montgomerys' daughter."
Sebastian didn't bother looking. "Thank you, no. She can break glass when she's not trying. I imagine she'd bring the entire house down by the time I was done with her." As if to punctuate the words, Jennifer Montgomery started giggling below them, and the piercing pitch of her giggle made his eardrums ache.
"You overrate your abilities, Sebastian." Kathryn removed two glasses from a passing waiter's tray and handed one to him.
"Kathryn, if you truly thought I was that bad in bed, you wouldn't bother trying to get me riled up. You should just admit that you're curious." Sebastian sipped his champagne.
"And you should just admit that you want me, and it drives you crazy that you can't have me."
"Now you're the one overrating your abilities. Go seduce the Delacroix boy. Maybe he can teach you something new."
"And what are you going to do? Sit here and write in your journal about how you're too much of a pussy to actually get laid tonight?" Kathryn swirled the wine in her glass idly, watching bubbles rise to the surface and layer into a thick white foam.
"You are thoroughly obsessed with my journal." Sebastian trailed his fingers over the back of her hand, idly caressing the silver and lapis beads of the custom-made rosary she carried within her sleeve. "It's too bad you'll never read it."
"I wouldn't want to." She affected disdain.
"Enjoy the party, dear sister." Sebastian started down the stairs, his eye on a stunning Asian girl in a skimpy red dress. "I hear that Xavier Rodriguez is back in town. He was quite infatuated with you. Perhaps his acne has improved."
"Get bent," Kathryn muttered.
"I intend to."

Author's Note: OMG, 1000 words of snarky dialogue SO HARD. Gods. I don't think this one turned out as well as the other, but I still kinda like it. Snarky bitching for the wins.
