Neil laughed and shook his head. "I guess it isn't very sensible. But it's just... something people do. You make a wish, too, when you blow the candles out. A tiny bit of wax might get on the frosting, but usually the candles are only lit for a few seconds before they're blown out." He watched with amusement while his boyfriend made another attempt to get the wick to stay lit.

"Make a wish...?" Bod said, looking up from the frustrating act of striking matches and lighting candles. "Do they come true?" It was sort of a nice idea. Make a wish, once a year, and blow out the candles... and it could come true! He regarded the candles thoughtfully. "Does blowing out more candles give you better odds? Maybe we should add a couple more..." They didn't even know how old Sherlock was, really. They sort of just put the candles on, and hoped he wouldn't mind. Bod wasn't entirely sure what the eccentric fellow was going to do, but part of him was a little curious, he had to admit.

"Depends who you ask, I guess," Neil said, smiling and taking the matchbox from Bod's fumbling hands. "I like to think they come true. But no, I don't think the number has anything to do with it. Otherwise how would children have their wishes granted?" He kissed Bod's cheek and then struck a match successfully. He lit the candle closest to him, then plucked it gently from the cake and handed it to Bod so he could use it to light the rest.

Bod raised an eyebrow, but grinned helplessly as he took the candle from him. "I don't understand why people thought that setting tiny, thin strips of wood on fire was a good idea," he grumbled good-naturedly. But he had very little trouble lighting the remainder of the candles.

"All right," he said, once they were all lit. "Where is our charming and sociable housemate?" He wanted to bring it to him before all the wax melted, and it didn't look like it would take long for the candles to do so.
