And Baron Byron Balaz was planning to kill her.
Alice wasn't sure why - her gift didn't give her the whys. She just knew that about two exchanges into their conversation she had begun getting visions of herself fighting someone, who must have been Balaz. For that reason, she'd been quick to suggest they make their meeting somewhere secluded. A couple of perfectly civil, even friendly, posts later, the visions showed her the same man by the lake she'd just suggested as a meeting place, obviously setting traps. As he decided what he would plant, she saw them all: herself caught in some sort of invisible net, sliced by tiny but deadly wires, consumed by explosions ( ... )

She'd had a chance to confirm one thing, though. One odd thing: His eyes were blue.
His array of weaponry was way beyond impressive, though. Without her foresight she would have been blasted into oblivion long before. Where did he get all of this?
More and more questions.
Considering and rejecting the idea of landing on his carriage (oh DEAR, that would have been messy!), she paused again near the lake shore. "Do I know your father?" she enquired artlessly.

The fact that the woman had stopped at shore's edge meant that she was either unable or unwilling to cross onto the water--it was obvious she hadn't expected the guns on the carriage though, so whatever action she took to avoid them was instinct....and instinct had told her to avoid water.
"Lord Balaz of Krauhausen. But here I thought he exhausted all his mercenaries and was just down to his loyal followers? But then, if you followed me all the way here, you couldn't be in it for the money, seeing as it's unlikely you could collect."

"We're frozen. The venom changes us, it makes us stronger and faster, but it also stops us in place. We can't age, or get sick, or bear children. We get hungry, but we can't starve to death. If your wires had torn off my arm, it would have been broken off. And you would have to tear me apart and burn the pieces to be sure of killing me."
His description of marriage made her laugh. Alice could never be so patient! "We got legally married once," she confessed. "Just for fun. It doesn't really mean that much for us. I've lost track of how many weddings Emmett and Rosalie have had, but it's just a show. We're together." She and Jasper, Emmett and Rose, Carlisle and Esme, Edward and Bella. They'd all been so lucky.

"So you're more like a living golem that relies on the blood of others to survive?" There was no way they could possibly be related, not with a description like that and yet he was still curious-- more curious now than he had been in the beginning in fact. He payed keen attention to the feel of her skin against his and she was right, there was something vaguely unyielding about it. "I don't mean to sound as if you are nothing more than a curio, Lady Alice, but I am positively amazed by this." He let a thumb rub over one over her knuckles before she pulled away, half expecting some kind of powder residue ( ... )

Except the one about running water. His kind seemed to be a combination of impossibilities and bad Hollywood stereotypes. If he had a weakness against garlic, she was going to have a hard time not laughing in his face.
She withdrew her hand, turning to the view as they stopped. Folding her arms on the edge, she rested her cheek on them, looking out at the lights as Byron described his erstwhile lady. His chuckle brought a smile to her face. "Poor girl. No, we're very serious about our commitments. Our mates are with us quite literally forever, after all, so it wouldn't do to be less than serious. It's the trappings that don't matter. It might be," she mused, "that it comes of all those years trying to blend in with humans. Carlisle and Esme always start off 'married', but the rest of us usually start as high school students. Then we're in college, then maybe Emmett and ( ... )
