Jayne was in the kitchen, peering into the fridge as he munched on a piece of toast. Okay, three pieces of toast. At once. And it wasn't so much toast as it was... bread. He hadn't had the patience to toast it.

Anyway, he was practically up to his shoulders in the fridge, so he didn't hear the key in the lock, and when he heard Kaylee's voice it startled him so bad he jerked back and bashed his head on the underside of the freezer door.

"Liu koushui de biaozi he houzi de ben erzi, qingwa cao de liumang, ni tama de!" he snarled, one hand fisting around the bread and sending crumbs all over the kitchen as the other grabbed at his head. But despite the knee-jerk reaction, he was really barely paying attention to the pain. He was too distracted by who he thought he'd just heard.

Slamming the refrigerator door, he crossed to the hall in three long strides. "That ain't Kaylee?? Where the ruttin' hell you pop up from?" he demanded. You'd think she'd been gone for months, the way he was staring at her.

The sounds of confusion from the kitchen only made Kaylee smile- she'd been half wondering what Jayne had been eating while she'd been gone- she hadn't left all that many leftovers in the fridge.

"Waddya mean?" Kaylee asked, giving Jayne a confused look. "I told y'all that the Doctor was gonna take me off for a few days, right?"

Her confusion annoyed Jayne, because it made him confused, too. Wasn't the situation plain as day? He scowled at her.

"Could be you said that," he allowed. "Can't rightly remember that far back. You know I never was much of one for dates, but I think I got it down what's a few days and what ain't."

Kaylee knew that Jayne weren't usually the brightest, but this was just getting confusing.

"What are you talking about, 'that far back'?" Kaylee asked, still looking puzzled. "I was only gone for- what? A week or two?"

The Doctor hadn't been real exact on that, but had just promised to Kaylee that he'd drop her back in town before too much time had gone by.
