421. SUNDAY!! ...

So I took my sister to watch Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 yesterday. Here's what she thinks of it ... "The movie is kinda long, I prefer to have more action/fighting scenes rather than the 17-year-old teen romance plot. But I like it better than movie #6". Also, I don't know whether it is because she has Master's Degree in Literature ( Read more... )

sister, sunday, plan

lol, just like you yours, my sister literally dragged me into seeing this movie the night before yesterday.
i'm SO not a harry potter fan. i mean, i can endure the movies, but i'd never be up for reading the books.
and i got the same impression from the movie as your sister. i actually saw that god awful hitler movie a couple of days ago for the first time and i guess the impression was still fresh so i drew parallels between the nazi regimen and harry potter.
and my sis was all AWWWWWW RON/HERMIONE. and i'm like...do you even realize what this movie is about?!?!?!?!

obviously, non hp fans are more objective to all the pairings and stuff and can actually see a greater picture :P either that or both your sister and i are crazy (and incidentally, i'm a literature student as well, lol), and i'm just saying this to make myself feel better.

OMG!!! That is so my reaction and your reaction is SO MY SISTER *lol*. My sister looked at me with raised eyebrow and said, "This is clearly about J.K. Rowling noticing fascism and how Snatchers are English punks, the middle class, and tried to capture the immigrants", etc. While I was like, but Ron/Hermione was cute, right? *grin*

But you know, maybe the fact that you and her both came from literary studies DO make the two of you more critical and capture symbols or interpretation in literature.

I remember while reading Deathly Hallows that I was like "OMG that's totally like back in WWII" with the whole pure blood thing and a lot of other stuff (and even the final battle of Dumbledore and Grindlewald being 1945), so yeah I definitely can see what she's saying there.
But maybe I'm overthinking stuff when it comes to fascism... what with being German and getting a lot of Nazi comments from all over the world for all my life... dunno... =D

Could be true -- or I'm simply ignorant to all those things when I read it *lol*

I'm pretty sure I've read JK Rowling interviews addressing the symbolism in the books. It's pretty deliberate, especially at the end (like, if i'm remembering correctly, Grindewhat-his-name fits very neatly into WWII). Though, me, I like the teen romance plot, too. :D

Yay, Lost Girl!

The teen romance trumps over anything symbolism in the book for me *lol*
