You lucky one... it's been almost 8 years since I was on a shooting range and I never thought I'd say that, but... I do miss it a little (even if I abysmal with everything else than the HK P8).

God, hopefully no one from the people I'm working with ever reads that... if I wasn't already doomed never to be elected into any office again, I'd be now ;)

I'm sorry to hear that. People shouldn't be so bigoted. There is the sport of marksmanship after all and many, many gun owners who would never use their guns for self-defense. I'm as liberal as they come and a gun owner. The Supreme Court has confirmed every American's right to own a firearm. Is Germany like Japan or the UK in that your ability to own firearms is highly restricted and access to the guns is tightly controlled?

Yep, and I don't mind it. I don't know if the name Erfurt rings a bell, but I've been living in this town for a few years and the whole thing with the shooting in the school is still a trauma here, even though it's been almost 7 years (granted, there was a lot more behind it than just easy access to weapons, but I'm still glad it's not exactly easy to buy a weapon here).

I think, in the end it's a question of mentality. Germany has quite the difficult and violent recent history (60 years is nothing...), maybe that's one of the reasons the right to own firearms isn't as important here as it is in the US.

Hmmm. No, it doesn't but I stopped reading the newspaper for the most part after the 2000 election because I would get so upset at what I was reading.

I find Germany's sensitivity towards its recent past admirable. I wish Austria would behave similarly.

Yes, we have more than our fair share of school shootings. I have to agree with the gun nuts though (I can't believe I'm saying that either) that it's not about the guns, it's about the disturbed individuals who use them. I think if someone wants to do something horrible, whether it's a school shooting or a terrorist act, they will get what they need, legally or illegally and there is very little that can be done to prevent it either through strict access laws or vigilance by law enforcement. It mostly seems to come down to luck. That sounds very cynical, which I am, and I wish it didn't seem to be true. That said, I think that our law enforcement and national security agencies get better all the time at increasing their chances of getting lucky and preventing these things.
