I agree with most of that, especially this: "I really do think he sets the pattern for every Doctor after him."

I've always felt that. It's easy to forget that in his original incarnation the Doctor was something of an anti-hero, indeed in the earliest days at times veered perilously close to being an outright villain, as well as being almost totally without a sense of humour..

I do love the First Doctor, but, yes, he is in many ways a very different figure than what the character later evolved into. (Which I think you can look at as interesting character development, rather than just writing it off as the show not yet being what it was to become, though, so that's nice.)

Hartnell's doctor isn't really without a sense of humor, but it's not quite the same sense of humor as we got later on. And, yeah, I'm not sure if it's there in the very early episodes at all.

It's actually kind of fascinating to look at where we started and where we ended up. I don't think you could ever have predicted one from the other! And I can't imagine how much different the show would be now if anyone other than Troughton had been cast, and brought something entirely different to the role. Who knows, it might not still be here at all.

I haven't seen any Troughton stories in ages, except for one that the BBC animated so poorly I found it nearly unwatchable, and sadly, that's most of what I remember about it right now.

I do remember enjoying them a long time ago! Maybe I will find time and a way to rewatch. Where do you watch the older ones?

I just want the guy who said, "Oh, screw this stultifying place, I want to go and see the universe!"
Agreed!

I didn't mind the animation, which I regard as more "stylized" than "poor," but that seems to be very much a matter of personal taste, and I can certainly see why some people just can't enjoy it.

I finally broke down and purchased a subscription to Britbox via Amazon, so that's where I've been watcing them. I was delighted to discover that they even have the missing episodes, in whatever format remains available for them.

Aw, now I'm really tempted by Britbox. I have been resisting. But perhaps resistance is futile?

It might be. They do seem to have quite a lot of stuff... I've been really resistant to the idea of subscribing to still more services. So I was sort of thinking I might just go for the free trial period, watch the stuff I wanted to watch for my canon review, and then cancel, but I don't think I can quite bring myself to cancel now. Sigh. This is how they get you! :)
