SCA and Objective Points of View

Partly this is in reply to your comment, Eva, from yesterday but I decided to make it a post on people wanting to be peers and having to attend meetings.

"Y'know, I sometimes wonder if the people who are really of the "OMG teh only thing worthwhile in the SCA is having a Peerage! Peers have ALL teh fun!" mindset know any peers.

I _do_ come away from some laurel meetings feeling great and telling people it was a great meeting--the amount of goodness I feel is pretty much directly in relation to how many people we recommend for elevation. I'm very much a "more the merrier" type.

I guess I'm still a new enough knight to be excited about the meetings. I like the feeling of being inside, and of giving counsel to the Crown. Sometimes I think silly decisions are made (one way or the other), and that can be uncomfortable.

During candidate discussions, I like that we're shaping the future of the society. Occasionally, we get to discuss important issues besides candidates, and that's even more fun.

At work, I like meetings. No surprise that at play I like them too. Obviously, they're not for everyone. I'm just the power hungry, autocratic, fascist type who would rather talk about doing stuff in a meeting than actually go out and do stuff.

Yeah I used to be like that and would like to think I'm still like that sometimes but I dunno. Anyways, you're a pretty nice fascist, as fascists go.

See, when I accepted Agnes' offer to make me an apprentice, I did it because I love to work with her, I know I can learn from her and with her, and I hope to be able to help her deal with any badness that comes from things like a nasty long meetings or taking on too much responsability.

I didn't do it because I have and undying need to be a Laurel. I want to learn how to present my work to be judged, and I want to increase my standards. She inspires me in this, and I think it's great that she'll help me.
