Autism Article in Wired Magazine

Feb 24, 2008 10:15

Just an FYI post, there's an article in the new Wired that includes Amanda Baggs and Michelle Dawson. I'm not done reading the article, but so far it's very good for a change!

The link to the PDF of the article can be found here: http://www.wired.com/services/press/. The link is about half way down the page, under the heading "The New Autism."

This article has me utterly squeeing in delight. Yes, it's all stuff I've heard before, but the fact that it's all there in one place, and that it's getting coverage outside of blogs and fora dedicated to autism... this is most definitely a Good Thing for our kind.

That's a really good article. It's evenhanded, interesting, and informative. I'm also finding it interesting to see how the autistic strengths and weaknesses listed apply to myself. I'm not good at the 3D/visualization stuff, and my memory is very uneven because of the ADHD/AS combination (amazing memory for facts about things I'm really interested in, terrible memory for whatever I was planning on doing a minute ago), but I'm really good at pattern recognition, logic, and writing. (My writing was technically indistinguishable from an adult's by about the time I turned nine.)

Michelle Dawson is incredibly fortunate to have her expertise and strengths recognized even though she doesn't have a university degree. I hope I can have a career that makes use of my strengths and insights even though I struggle in university.

Yeah, I'm not good with the 3D visualization stuff either (and I have one of the world's worst senses of direction to back that up...), and my memory is equally...strange. But I definitely do have strengths that I would never want to cure.

Me too on the weird memory.
The thing is I have excellent long term memory, but my short term memory is shot; so I can remember a book from when I was six, but I can also give my sister a piece of candy, then a second later be wondering where my candy went.
The long term memory thing really comes in handy for school work, I read through something once, and I never have to study it again, now if only I could stop losing all my stuff, that would be great.
