After seeing three episodes of Elementary, I'm quite there with you with calling them just Mark and Annie. It doesn't feel like Sherlock to me either. As it's been established before, I'm not a hardcore Sherlock fan and it's just a TV show among others for me but it still wins hands down over Elementary. In my mind Elementary is just a show about a guy solving crimes in New York with a help of a friend. The fact that the guy happens to be named Sherlock is beside the point.
I couldn't help it this time! Not that I tried, mind you *g*
The deductions and the misteries are really pretty basic in Elementary but I guess I can see how the interaction among the characters could make this show interesting. At least one aspect is well thought of! But, no, there's no way I could ever like Elementary half as much as I do Sherlock. There's a whole abyss between the shows. And the Sherlocks, too!
I feel really sorry for JLM. He's so good and acts his heart out while been presented with plots that are hardly worthy of Sherlock Holmes. I mean, it is a good enough show, as far as distraction goes, but the pet peeve I have with it is the same I have with a certain kind of fanfic: why bait people with calling the lead roles after well known characters but then make them not recognisable as those characters at all? *grrrr*
I agree. JLM is really doing a good job in creating a Sherlock-like character but he doesn't really have a good material to work with. How can you *really* be Sherlock Holmes if your deductions are not worthy of one?
why bait people with calling the lead roles after well known characters but then make them not recognisable as those characters at all? Yep! And that's basically why to be able to truly get some enjoyment out of the show I'm reduced to think of the main characters as Mark and Annie.
Well, if you don't get into it expecting to see a plot worthy of Sherlock Holmes and just content yourself with good character interaction and simple plot, you will enjoy it. Many people love it so don't take my word for it if you want to try it out. I'm very biased ;)
But, if you love BBC Sherlock, you need to keep in mind this is nothing like it. As far away as possible actually.
