Governer Christie is a douchebag...

...so...I just found out that my school district will be cutting anywhere from 21-80 positions (depending on whether or not the budget passes...which it won't since most of the town chooses to send their children to private schools, and would rather their tax dollars NOT be spent on public education).

And that means...non-tenured teachers go first.

work/teaching, real life, wtf

There's almost identical BS going on in the district I've been working in up North here. Cuts now are screwing over me, fellow young teachers, and worse -- the kids. I already have classes with 28, 31, and 32 students. I shudder to think of what will happen when they axe jobs to 'save money'.

Trust me when I give you a very large, very loud MOTTO and my deepest sympathies.

As a science teacher, the maximum number of kids I have in a class is 24 (my supervisor has fought to keep classes that size for years now)...and I can assure you, 2 of the 4 rooms I teach in can't hold any more than that (they only have lab tables, no desks, so 24 is the limit). WTF will they do if I'm gone? How will they spread my 100+ students amongst the other teachers? Answer - they CAN'T.

I'm still hoping that things will magically change...until I get any kind of official notice, I still potentially have a job.

Kinda.

Maybe.

*sigh*

Thanks for the support...it's appreciated.

Teaching -- you go in it for the kids, and then the politics eat you alive.

Seems some days like we really, really can't win.

No worries about the support. I'm a teacher too, and even though we're from two different countries I completely get it.

Fingers crossed on my end, m'dear.

Sadly, Georgia seems to be following suit. They have a job until June..30th, or something like that, and then no more. Really people? Because you can't budget 120 million bucks, the education system of this state must be stupider?? REALLY? Cause last I checked, we were rivaling for the 50th spot.

Our newly elected governor has been clear that he has absolutely NO LOVE for public school, and no respect for teachers in general...I can't begin to tell you how many different ways he's trying to screw us over (i.e. cutting our pensions, increasing the number of years it takes to get tenure from 3 to 5, budget cuts, etc). Because we are all apparently the spawns of satan.

And, yeah, clearly this means my life gets fucked up royally.

But, forget about me and my hard working co-workers for a second...doesn't he understand that he's affecting these children's FUTURES?

*sigh*

I certainly didn't vote for him...and I can't believe how many teachers (who were well aware of his thoughts on public education) actually VOTED for him. The sheer stupidity of people never ceases to amaze me...

Right?? I feel like every time our governor is referenced because Georgia has not gotten smarter in the umpteen years he's been around. We had a furlough day...in the middle of midterms, here in public college.

Here's his latest budget cuts which boggle the mind. He's....special. And people keep voting for this idiot. I so wanted the other guy to win because he had legitimate ideas that would have done something. *sigh*

My current plan is to either (a) run away and live in a cave by the sea with my cats, emerging periodically to purchase chocolate and cat food or (b) marry someone rich so I can travel as much as I like, and devote the rest of my free time to pursuing a career as a writer.

Yeah. Either one of those should do the trick...

[/end fantasy]

*sigh*

I hate people. I really do...

I didn't vote for him an I am ridiculously scared of things he's doing.

I am actually wondering if he will try to push older teachers into retirement as well because they need to be paid more, and then try to keep a revolving door of extended substitution because that equals cheap and not having to pay benefits. :(

The school I am in is a "Quest" program to go straight to my masters and I'm hoping that I'm not completely screwed because of that... :/

I just... I don't understand him.

My mom is also a teacher, and even though she's close to retiring on her own, she's still afraid they're going to force her out before she's ready.

I'm familiar with "Quest" programs...my university had one (although I'm a product of NJ's illustrious alternate-route program, myself). It's 5 years, right?

There's nothing to understand...he's acting like a spoiled, spiteful child. And, unfortunately, you can't reason with someone like that...
