At the Christmas festivities were a few of his father's friends, some of his mother's colleagues from the museum who had no families of their own, an as yet unnamed mutt that had followed Alex home (in truth he'd bribed her with some sausages) and his Uncle Jonathan's "latest."
Alex wanted to ask latest what? but his mother said the word with such disdain that he, at age six, didn't have the courage to ask.
"All in all, a normal family holiday." Alex heard his father comment to himself.
