More Reports From My Favourite Book GenreToday in a cafe at the British Museum, where I ploughed my way through two and a half chapters of one of my research books, there were two old white Australian men - one identified by the other as a Tory - mansplaining to a black woman with a baby (I later found out that her name was Lucy and that she ( Read more... )

Lucy sounds wonderful. If there's a website or something where it's possible to see her art, I'd be really interested.

I got a haircut at the weirdly sensual hair salon today, and...if she's not actually touching anything more exciting than my shoulders, how weird is it for the lady doing the shampooing to have her hands down my shirt? (I didn't mind, but it was somewhat surprising.)

It's www.nammiart.com - she says she's going to try to get some images up there within a couple of weeks (the exhibition finishes next Friday, I'm going to try to see it before then). Irrelevant to the conversation and so on, but she was also breath-takingly pretty. It was quite a nice encounter all round.

That sounds like a bonus to me, was it like a massage in addition to the haircut? Obvs. would drive me mental because I hate people touching me but it sounds like it could be quite relaxing under the right circumstances.

Cool! I'll check it out! And it sounds very nice.

Yeah, you go in for a haircut, and the lady who shampoos you also massages your scalp, neck, face, shoulders, and arms (usually entirely over the clothes). It was quite a surprise the first time, since they didn't actually mention it in advance, but it's nice (although I generally dislike massages).

I'm no big fan of massage either, but I like their determination to give you as pleasant a service as possible.

That is awesome.

(If it had been tumblr, she would have cowed the men into submission, and the entire room would have stood up and applauded her. Obv.)

~I think Tumblr fails to understand that the power balance in the world is not as easily redistributed as they think it is.

Whoops, yes, so it is! Tumblr has grown ever more mental about such things.

It was a really good turning point and her baby was outrageously cute, I think I should do. She said they were abstract, emotional pieces with the stories set beside them.

Hurray for kindred spirits! And I'm so glad I'm only on Tumblr infrequently and haven't encountered that dialogue! Oh, and I just checked and Lucy has a Facebook page, which I have liked :-)
